This smaller area holds a family of four runner ducks. One drake and three hens but is only the over-night area for them.
They tend to be in the woodland area foraging in the undergrowth on most days, so are very difficult to photograph. We hope to get more images in the spring.
Here are details about them.
Cyrus
Cyrus is the male of the bunch, he and another drake, Harry, came with the three girls but unfortunately, Harry was in very poor health and sadly died after a short illness, the vet thought he also had nerve damage in his spine which made him unable to stand during his illness. These five and three Muscovies were abandoned when the owner moved house and a kindly neighbour took them in temporarily. He contacted us and we brought them in but Harry was underweight and it seemed he had been neglected from an early age. Luckily the others are thriving and have brought us much pleasure as their characters have come to the fore.
Cyrus is an excellent drake and he is constantly watching over the girls when they are out.
Fast Hariet
Hariet was named by one of our followers on Facebook but we added the 'Fast' as she is such a busy-body and runs everywhere. Of all the resisdents here, she is the one who has the most stories about her. She is always on the go and noisy and is loved by everyone who meets her.
Venus
Venus got her name from the fact that she is like a Venus Fly Trap and is only exceded in the quantity of flies she can catch by Hariet. She can always be found with the other two but can easily be distracted by a fly or bee.
Sarmila
Sarmila was also named from our Facebook page, her name means shy, happy or modest. Sarmila is also a chaser of flies but she loves to forage too and tends to encourage Hariet to stray from Cyrus. She is probably the most nervous with humans in the group but is always in the lead when food is around!
